All of Syria's Heritage sites put on endangered list

All six of Syria's World Heritage sites have been placed on an endangered list by the World Heritage Committee (WHC).

Due to the ongoing civil war in the country, the six sites, which include the City of Damascus dating back to around 6300 BC, are in danger of being destroyed.

The danger listing is intended to mobilise all possible support to safeguard the sites, which are recognised by the WHC as having "outstanding universal value."

The other sites added to the danger list are the site of Palmyra, the Ancient City of Bosra, the Ancient City of Aleppo, Crac des Chevaliers and Qal'at Salah El Din, and the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria.

The decision was made as part of the WHC's review of state conservation of World Heritage sites already on the World Heritage List, which also included locations such as the city of Jerusalem, Timbuktu and the Everglades National Park.

Currently in Phnom Penh, the WHC is holding its 37th session in Cambodia. The session will end in Angkor on 27 June.
