Merlin’s Madame Tussauds makes mark in Beijing
POSTED 04 Jun 2014 . BY Jak Phillips

Merlin Entertainments has launched its first attraction in the Chinese capital of Beijing, a Madame Tussauds situated next door to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

The site’s waxworks are a blend of Chinese stars – including Olympic Swimmer Ye Shi Wen, rockstar Cui Jian and TV presenter Yang Lan – together with familiar global stars such as David Beckham, Lady Gaga and Madonna.

It is the fourth Tussauds to open in China – joining those in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Wuhan – and Merlin’s 102nd attraction worldwide.

Beijing’s continued economic growth and appetite for western brands made this a logical strategic step for Merlin, with demand for the attraction exceeding the company’s expectations as thousands of pre-bookings were made.

More than 3,500 visitors arrived on the first day of opening, with Hong Kong-based actor Carina Lau cutting the ribbon, before posing for the now customary photo next to her waxwork.

“Our visitors have the chance to relive history in the Spirit of Beijing – a celebration of China’s rich and diverse history – or see our amazingly lifelike figures of world leaders like US President Obama,” said Madame Tussauds Beijing general manager Rain Wang.

“They will also be able to test their football skills with Lionel Messi in our new sports zone, and meet their favourite local and international music stars.”
