Spookers launches Kickstarter campaign to open Australia's first major haunted attraction

New Zealand’s award-winning haunted attraction Spookers wants to bring the fright to Australia after launching a NZ$200,000 (US$171,250, €126,000, £102,000) Kickstarter campaign to rent an Aussie location.

Spookers is a live entertainment experience in which the “victims” move through theatrically-themed haunted houses and outdoor environments populated by sets, props and live scare-actors. As visitors walk through the attraction – which offers scares ranging from age 16+ restrictions to those suitable for children aged eight-years and over – they encounter visual, tactile, and audio effects to give them a fright.

Spookers directors, Andy, Beth and Julia Watson are appealing to the Spookers fans on social media, with a community of more than 41,000 Facebook fans along with thousands of newsletter subscribers and Australians making up around 10 per cent of the attractions’ followers on social media.

If successful, the project will bring Australia its first major haunted attraction, with the operators currently in negotiations with two properties close to the city of Brisbane in Queensland. If the target is exceeded, the additional funds will be used to add additional sets, props and animatronics, to scare guests.

Spookers NZ currently employs five full-time, one part-time, and 130 casual employees, with similar numbers expected for an Australian addition.

If the project is successful in attracting funding, Spookers Australia is expected to be open by the end of 2015.
