Otoy showcases exciting new VR technologies at Siggraph
POSTED 25 Aug 2015 . BY Tom Anstey
The technology is potentially a revolutionary step forward in AR and VR technology Credit: Otoy
Los Angeles-based tech company Otoy has debuted new immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences with its light field rendering technology and live 360-degree avatar scanning within VR.

Showcasing the new technologies at the annual Siggraph event, Otoy – which specialises in cloud graphics to deliver cutting-edge digital content – demonstrated its light field rendering pipeline to attendees. Utilising Otoy’s specially-developed light field camera array, Lightspace technology, OctaneRender software, Octane Render Cloud and the ORBX Media Player, the technology allows users to put on a head-mounted display (HMD) and walk around within their environment using both VR and augmented reality (AR) devices.

In addition to the light field tech, Otoy also debuted its 360-degree avatar scanning, enabling human-sized avatar scanning which can create a virtual representation of people inside a VR environment, mirroring the actions they are carrying out in the real world. Using the ORBX Media Server and Microsoft’s Kinect, the technology means users can interact with others in the same room or even with people across the internet.

“Otoy has made astounding progress, taking breakthrough technologies we premiered at Siggraph last year and productising them into fully functional, future-ready production pipelines that anyone can use today,” said Otoy CEO, Jules Urbach. “The most demanding formats, such as holographic light field rendering and 16K video, are achievable today in an economic way, using existing tools. We’re proud to continue our tradition of graphics innovation, and will strive to put even more revolutionary capabilities in the hands of content creators everywhere.”

Otoy is heavily involved in the world of VR and has been also working on its own HMD software, including an experience based on Batman: The Animated Series and VR experiences related to sports broadcasting.
